Grok has never been a typical investor. We do things that require courage, deep belief, and often gut-wrenching commitment to the outcomes we believe the world needs.

Originally backed by Mike Cannon-Brookes, CEO and co-founder of Atlassian, Grok has been investing in climate tech since 2016. An early example includes a failed Twitter bet with Elon Musk - which resulted in the Hornsdale Battery being delivered by Tesla in less than 100 days - we were early believers in the disruptive ability of grid scale lithium ion batteries.

Along the way, we’ve invested in a multitude of different solutions for decarbonisation. In the solar technology space alone, we’ve backed solar cells, solar farms, solar financing, and solar customer-supplier matching. We believe it’s going to take an array of solutions within every sector to solve the challenges of decarbonisation. We see the opportunity set as massive.

Over time we have developed a differentiated perspective by investing from company formation through to major infrastructure projects. Our profile has expanded by virtue of major Lighthouse investments - such as AGL Energy - where we catalysed investor support for a strategic shift and the appointment of new directors to the board. This led AGL to commit to accelerating the closure of its coal generators, which is expected to avoid 200m tonnes of CO2-eq emissions.

As an early participant in climate investing we have seen industries and business models evolve, we have valuable insights and understanding of the opportunity spaces. Our investment strategy is focused on climate tech, encompassing Venture and Infrastructure, as well as Lighthouse Investments, which we are uniquely positioned to pursue.

We seek to achieve significant decarbonisation outcomes while ensuring attractive risk-adjusted returns, ultimately leveraging our experience and position to further increase the flow of capital into climate solutions.
